MECA solves this dilemma through allowing you to easily retrieve offline messages. This way, you just send an IM to a buddy who is offline and the message will be delivered as soon as your friend logs in again. You can be sure that your message will go through as soon as they get back online. So if you need to hear back about something ASAP, that person will know whether they check their email or not.
