InterOp
I already use another IM application... can I talk to my existing Buddies from MECA?
- During the user registration process you will be prompted to enter your screen name and password for each messenger's Buddy List that you wish MECA to import. You can import Buddie Lists from AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and ICQ.
- MECA will then automatically upload your Buddy List(s) into your Buddie Remote window!
- This technology is called Interoperability, or InterOp for short.
What is InterOp?
- Currently, most instant message applications only provide the ability for users to instant message with Buddies within the same application.
- MECA has the technology of "Interoperability" which enables our users to instant message Buddies outside of MECA.
- With InterOp, MECA can IM with AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, and ICQ.
- For more information and to learn how to setup your InterOp accounts please visit our InterOp Page.
Why did I receive the same instant message on MECA and AIM at the same time?
- Receiving multiple messages occurs when you are signed into the AOL Instant Messaging Network more than once on the same PC. For example, when you log onto your AIM account through MECA AND onto the AOL Instant Messenger on the same PC, the messages sent to you will be delivered to both messengers. You can prevent the duplicate messages by having only one instance of your AIM account open at a time.
Why did I receive an instant message notification from the screen name "AOL System Msg?"
- The instant message you received was sent from AIM to notify you that your screen name is currently signed into the AOL Instant Messaging Network more than once. For example, you have logged onto your AIM account through MECA AND you logged onto the AOL Instant Messenger on the same PC. The message was sent to help you manage your instant messaging sessions because AIM supports active messaging sessions in multiple locations. For more information please consult the AOL Instant Messenger’s FAQ, Keywords: Instant Message Routing.
My AIM Buddies who connect via the Trillian Messenger can no longer read the messages I send to them. What can I do?
- MECA supports the Unicode character set. This means that in addition to basic English characters, your messenger can now display characters for languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
- The incompatibility you’re experiencing with your AIM Buddies on Trillian is due to Trillian’s lack of Unicode support. Your AIM buddy may have even received the following message from Trillian: "Your friend has just sent you a message using the Unicode character set, and Trillian does not currently support this. Unicode support will be coming soon!." Unfortunately, this problem will persist as long as your friend continues to use Trillian’s basic version 2.0 and below.

What is the Message Window?
- This is where your selected skin images and active conversations will be displayed. Grab any edge of a message window to change the height and/or width. Please note that resizing a message window will likely distort your skin image a bit.
What is the Conversation Window?
- The Conversation Window is the larger, white area on your Message Window, which displays your conversations with your MECA Buddies.
How does the Conversation Window work?
- Your MECA Buddie's screen name will appear on the left side of the Conversation Window followed by their message.
- A scroll bar will appear on the right side of the Conversation Window as the conversation grows.
- Every conversation has a 1000 line limit. If you reach that limit, you will receive a message. You can choose to delete the top portion of the conversation or close and reopen a new conversation with your Buddie.
What is the status bar?
- The status bar displays the screen name of the MECA Buddie you are currently instant messaging.
- If you have InterOp accounts set-up, the status bar will also display the name of the instant messenger (AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, or ICQ) after your MECA Buddie's screen name.

What is a skin?
A skin is the custom background on the message window and the primary piece of your Word2U Messenger messaging experience. (Hey, a picture is worth a thousand words!)
How do people get my skins?
When people download your Word2U Messenger, they will initially get up to 4 of your skins (of your choosing, of course) and can then download additional skins
from your custom Skins Page or personal Word2U Messenger Home Page.
Your friends will also share your Word2U Messenger skin with each other automatically when they message, spreading the word about your Word2U Messenger! This is MECA’s
patented SkinSharing technology, which allows your skin to be seen by people your friends message with.
Can people get more skins than the four skins in my skin package?
Your friends can download and use as many of your skins as they want. In addition to getting the skins in your skin package at download, your fans can get your skins by:
- Going to your custom skins page and downloading new skins
- Going to your personal Word2U Messenger Home Page in the MECA messengers network
- SkinSharing with others. When a member SkinShares, their skin automatically gets downloaded into the friend’s skin manager for them to use
Creating Skins
What are the guidelines for posting skin images?
MECA is committed to providing our members with a secure, comfortable environment. We reserve the right to delete any image at our discretion.
Photo Guidelines:
- All photos must be submitted in .jpg or .gif format, and can be no larger than 1MB.
- Pictures should be at least 492 width x 347 pixels in size.
- You can only upload files from your computer, no URLs.
- Copyrighted images may not be posted if you do not own the copyright.
I am getting an error that says my file is the wrong format, how can I change it?
Your file must be in .gif or .jpg format to use it for a Word2U Messenger skin. You can convert your images a couple of different ways:
To convert your image to .jpg format (Windows users):
- From your start menu, go to Programs > Accessories > Paint.
- In the Paint program at the top of the program, select File > Open and choose the file that you would like to use. Make sure it's not too large, as our file size limit is 1MB.
- Select Image > Attributes to check the size and/or crop your photo. Once you have photo sized and cropped how you like, select File > Save As.
- At the bottom of the window select the drop down menu beside the Save as type and select .jpg from the menu. It's that easy!
I am getting an error that says my file is too big, how do I make it smaller?
You may use a file up to 1MB for your skin. If your file is larger than 1MB you’ll need to resize it to below 1MB before you can create your
skin.
You can use an application called IrfanView to resize your image file. To get a FREE version of this product, go to www.download.com and search
on “IrfanView” in their software section.
Once you have downloaded and installed IrfanView, run the program, open your image (remember .gif or jpgs only!) and re-save it under a new file
name (like adding an “a” at the end).
After you’ve finished resizing your image file, you’ll be all set to create you new skin!
I am getting an error that says my image is too large or not square enough, how can I crop it or make it smaller?
To resize your image (Windows users):
From your start menu, go to Programs > Accessories > Paint.
In the Paint program at the top of the program, select File > Open and choose the file that you would like to use. Make sure it's not too
large, as our file size limit is 1MB.
Select Image > Attributes to check the size and/or crop your photo. Once you have photo sized and cropped how you like, select File > Save
As.
At the bottom of the window select the drop down menu beside the Save as type and select .jpg from the menu. It's that easy!
How do I create a Skin?
To create a skin, log in to the Word2U Messenger management tool, from the home page select the Skins tab or click the “Make a Skin” button. Follow the steps and at the end you’ll have a great new skin for your Word2U Messenger! To make things easier for you, we’ve included helpful tips and explanations on the page for you.
What is a Skin Name?

- Click the GET icon on your messenger Buddie Remote or Message Window and select MAKE A SKIN from the drop-down menu, this will open the Skin Builder.
- Select the image for your skin.
- Browse your computer files to find the image you want to use for your custom skin. For example, you could use a picture of you and your friends, your favorite pet, a place you love to hang out, or even a graphical image that you designed yourself!
Image Tips:
Image dimensions
For best results your image should be at least 492 pixels wide x 347 pixels high or larger. If your image is smaller than the minimum size of 492x347 it will be stretched when your skin is created, this can make your pictures look kind of funky. If your image is too large for our system you will be notified when you try to create your skin.Note - The image size is usually included in the description when you roll-over your image file. For example: (492 pixels wide x 347 pixels high). Please use your favorite image editing software, like PhotoShop or Paint.Net to resize or crop your image to the suggested dimensions.
Image file type
Your image should be either a GIF or a JPEG file.If you’re using Windows, follow these easy steps to convert your image to a JPEG:
- From the Start menu, go to Programs > Accessories > Paint.
- At the top of the Paint program, select File > Open and choose the file that you would like to use.
- From the File menu, select Save As, type in a name and select JPEG.
Image file size
Your image should be no larger than 1MB.If you are notified you that your image file is too big when you try to make your skin, please use your favorite image editing software, like PhotoShop or Paint.Net, and try either reducing the color depth, cropping, or resizing your image.
- Name your skin.
- Tell us what you’d like to call your skin - the more fun the better! The name of your skin will display below your image in the skins network on the web where people can browse and download your skin. Once downloaded, your skin will be listed by its name in each person’s skin collection on their messenger. Skin names have a 64 character length maximum.
- Create a description.
- We know you may not be able to squeeze everything into a skin name, so enter a description to tell everyone more about your skin! For example: Who or what is in your picture? Where and when was it taken? You could also include your favorite quote, a poem, etc… We know a picture is worth a thousand words… but try to stick to the 240 characters length limit!
- Decide on a few tag words.
Tags are one-word descriptors that you can include with your skin, for search purposes.
- Separate your tags with a space. If your tag is two words, like "San Francisco", do not include the space, enter it as "sanfrancisco".
- Tags are not case-sensitive.
- You can enter several tags up to the 256 character length limit.
- The tags won’t be visible to anyone but they will be used when someone is searching for skins.
For example, if you make a skin from a Spring Break picture and included the tags: Mexico beach party snorkeling, when someone searches under the word “beach” your skin will show in the search results.
- Select a category.
- Please select a category for your skin: People, Places or Things. Your skin will display in one of these categories in the Community Skins section on the skins network. We’d love to hear your suggestions for new categories. so please let us know your ideas at feedback@mecamessenger.com.
- Select a Buddie Remote color
- Please select the color of the Buddie Remote you will see when using your skin.
Tip: Since the Buddie Remote and skin will display on your desktop at the same time, select a color that is complimentary to your skin.
- Click the small color square you want.
- Click the UPDATE PREVEW button to see how it will look before clicking the CREATE SKIN button.
- If you don’t like the color you picked, simply select another color and try again.
- Click the CREATE SKIN button and you are done!
How do I manage my skins?
You can manage your skins by hiding or unhiding them in the skins network. Did you decide you didn’t like the image you used? Not to worry, you can hide your skin so people can’t see it or download it from the skins network. If your friends already have a skin you made and subsequently hid, then it will still be available for them to use. If you’ve hidden a skin and now want it to show again, then you simply uncheck the “Hide this Skin” box and it’ll show up in the skins network again.
What are the guidelines for posting skin images?

Can I edit my skin after I have made it?
No, once your skin has been posted on the skins network you cannot edit it. You can, however, hide your skin so no one else can download it from the skins network. See Hide/Unhide This Skin (above) for details

SkinSharing
What is SkinSharing?
- MECA Communications, Inc.'s patent pending SkinSharing technology allows your skin to be seen by those you message with and vice versa.
- This exciting feature has never been offered by any other instant messaging service.
- There are two types of skin sharing situations:
- The first is aMECA Buddie to MECA Buddie skin share. For example: You are using your favorite Idol skin, and your MECA Buddie is using the MECA logo skin. When you message with your MECA Buddie, your skin will fade out, and their skin will display on your Message Window, replacing yours, and vice versa.
- The second SkinSharing situation is between MECA and an InterOp Messenger, such as MSN. For example: You are using your favorite Idol skin, and you send a message from MECA to a contact on your InterOp MSN Messenger list. To share your skin with your MSN contact you can click the "SkinShare" button on your Message Window. Your MSN Buddie will receive a descriptive link they can click to preview your skin. Your Buddie will also have the option to download MECA and the skin.
Screen Names
What is a screen name?
- A screen name is your personal "alias" that allows your MECA Buddies to recognize you.
- You will create your screen name when you register.
- Your screen name must be original, containing between 1 and 64 characters.
- Your screen name is not your email address. Your email address is something like username@domain.com
What if the screen name I want has already been registered?
- If your screen name is not available, a message will appear saying that the screen name you have entered is already in use. Try variations of your original choice. For example, if your first choice is "IdolFan", try "IdolFan1" or if your first choice is "IdolFan" and you are from England try "IdolFanENG."
- Make your screen name unique... remember this is how all your MECA Buddies will recognize you!
How do I get additional screen names?
- To obtain additional screen names go to the registration page and complete the form once for each new screen name.
- Complete the registration of your new screen name, and if prompted to download, click cancel (as you already have MECA installed).
- Run MECA and login with your newly created account.

- It doesn’t matter what messenger your Buddie is on – you can create a nickname for anyone. What’s really cool is that you can name them anything you want because you’ll be the only one who sees it!
How do I do it?
- There are four ways you can create a nickname for a Buddie:

- From your Buddie Remote, select a Buddie name (MECA or InterOp), and hit “F2”
- Right-click on your Buddie's name, and select "Create Nickname" from the drop-down menu.

The maximum length is 255 characters) Once you’re done, hit “Enter” or click somewhere outside the edit box. The nickname will display instead of the screen name in your Buddie List.
- Include a nickname when you add your Buddie from the Add Buddie button.
Note: Pressing escape while editing the name will return that Buddie’s name back to the original display name.
Can I change a nickname?
- Yes, as long as you are logged in to the messenger, you can update a Buddie nickname at any time, it doesn’t matter if they are online or not.
- Follow the same steps to update a nickname as you would to create a new one.
Note: Pressing escape while editing the name will return that Buddie’s name back to the previous nickname.

- Backspace to delete the nickname so it is blank.
- Press “Enter” or make the edit box loose focus.
- Your Buddie’s display name will be the original display name.
Will I always see the nicknames?
- The nickname you have given to a Buddie will display until you change or delete it, or you delete your Buddie - as long as you are using the same computer that you used when you created the nicknames.
- Your Buddies’ nicknames won’t display if:
- If you sign on to the messenger using a different computer than the one you were using when you created the nickname(s). (You can create new ones for this computer!)
- If you sign on to the messenger using the same computer but a different screen name than the one you were using when you created the nickname(s). (Again, you can create new ones for this account!)

Why is the first letter of each MSN message I receive missing?
Several instances have been reported that the first letter of each message sent by a MSN user connected via MECA to a MSN user connected via Trillian, is missing. We are aware of the problem and are currently investigating if there is any action that we can take to remedy the situation.
AOL is my Internet Service Provider (ISP), and I cannot connect to MECA.
If you are using AOL as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), [meaning you connect through AOL], then you are subject to restrictions set by AOL's Parental Controls. ** AOL Parental Controls must be set to General in order to use MECA. The General setting removes all restrictions on the AOL connection and allows access to all features and content on AOL and on the World Wide Web. AOL Parental Control settings affect all programs that access the Internet using the AOL connection, such as Netscape, Internet Explorer, or MSN Instant Messenger, and Yahoo Instant Messenger, and are not specific to MECA. Failure to set your Parental Controls to General will result in a connection error.
**If you have a dialup or broadband service provider (Cable Modem/DSL/T1) other than AOL, and simply access AOL through these services, then none of the above restrictions apply to you, as you are not affected by AOL Parental Controls.
